When Roberto and Fernanda Bigne left Buenos Aires, they came first to Los Angeles. Although they loved L.A., they had an extended family in Miami and decided to move after two years here. There, they opened a small bakery and deli, but Fernanda says, “From day two, we longed to return to California.”

It took them 12 years to do so. Three months ago, they opened Il Dolce in Costa Mesa with Roberto, a highly trained pizza chef (certified by the Verace Pizza Napolitana Assn.) making the pizzas and Fernanda taking the role of pastry chef.

Roberto prepares his pizza in the classic way, even making his own mozzarella, tossing the dough in the air to stretch it and baking the “pies” in a wood-burning oven.

2.12.2010 - Pile up on Il Dolce: OC Weekly

Both the L.A. Times' S. Irene Virbila and the O.C. Register's Jeff Overley reviewed Il Dolce in Costa Mesa yesterday. If you count my own review a few weeks ago, this recent critic pile up has turned into a perfect storm of attention for this little Italian/Argentinean pizzeria that could.

...if there was a butterfly on this classic case of the butterfly effect, it would be our tipster and buddy Craig Medici, who first snapped the first pics of the place as it was getting ready to open and told us of its goodness, which I posted on this very blog.
